Vasile Iovu (pan flute), Artist of the People

Vasile Iovu was born on July 24, 1950 in the village of Bardar, district of Ialoveni. He began his studies at the middle school in the village of Bardar (1956-1960). Between 1960 and 1967 he made the special music school of the State Conservatory „Gavriil Musicescu” and between 1967-1971 he studied at the State Institute of Arts „Gavriil Musicescu” As an instrumentalist in the Folklore Music Orchestra he has been working since 1970 and since 1973 he has been a professor at the Academy of Music, Theater and Fine Arts, People's Instruments Department.  

Since 1992 he is the organizer and artistic director of the ensemble „Vasile Iovu”. He has made numerous recordings for the Radio and Television Fund (about 200 musical pieces); CDs – „In My Mother’s Memory”, „Legend of Bessarabia,Ave Maria”, „Meditation”, „Echo of the Dacians”; „Love is like a flower”; 4 CDs with the ensemble „Vasile Iovu”, recorded in Austria and Germany, and the movie - Author's Concert. He has performed numerous concerts in the country and abroad - France (Congress Palace in Strasbourg), Australia (World Exhibition), Philippines, Japan, India, China, Nepal, United Kingdom, Italy (Santa Maria Cathedral) „Mozart” Hall in Manheim and „Beethoven” Hall in Bonn), Austria (Votiv Kirche Cathedral). 

He has participated in concerts of various genres: jubilee, commemorative, themed, creative, gala concerts, cultural events at the governmental level. He edited the books: „Panflute Method”; Collection of pieces for panflute and orchestra; Educational programs for panflute and musical arrangements. He collaborated with the orchestras: „Mugurel”; „Fiddlers” State Symphony Orchestra in Moscow; Saint Petersburg Symphonic Orchestra and Jazz Orchestra; Symphonic Orchestra of National Radio-Television, Moldova; Symphonic Orchestra of „George Enescu” Philharmonic (Romanian Athenaeum); and with masters - Gh. Zamfir, M. Biesu, E. Doga, Gr. Vieru, A. Samoila, Gh.Mustea and others. 

For his rich musical activity, Vasile Iovu was awarded the following Honorary Titles and State Distinctions: in 1980 - Emeritus Artist of the Republic of Moldova; in 1989 - Artist of the People; in 1992 – „Civic Merit medal; in 2000 - University Professor and National Prize; and in 1980 he was given the title Knight of the Order of the Republic.
